Each year some of Cambodia’s most popular musical artists are invited to perform and help raise desperately needed funds to support the work of HCC. The 4th Annual Australian Charity Concerts will commence on the 24th June 2006 and over the following 5 weeks, 5 concerts will be held in Australia’s 3 largest cities. HCC provides support to young women and children who are vulnerable to trafficking and sexual and labor exploitation. Through the ‘Good Day Centre’ , HCC is able to provide practical support for over 100 vulnerable children each year. In addition to supporting basic needs the centre also provides healthcare, counseling, educational support, vocational training, and social and economic development to ensure that each of these children can look forward to a bright future. All money raised through this year’s charity concerts will go towards supporting the ongoing work of HCC in helping poor and unfortunate children and families. The concerts that have been held since 2003 have been well attended by the community in Australia, with extensive press coverage in Cambodia and Australia, including Radio Australia. Each year the support by the Cambodian Community in Australia has been overwhelming and the number of people supporting these concerts has continued to increase. It has been very exciting for those involved to see Australia’s Cambodian community, which numbers more than 30,000, getting behind these events to help raise funds for those Cambodians who are less fortunate. It is also a great opportunity for these communities to see some of Cambodia’s best musicians, and they will not be disappointed with this year line-up that includes Mr Preap Sovath, Miss Meas Sok Sophea, Miss Snguon Srey Nuch, and Mr Meas Raden. The group will be accompanied by the Akki Band (Fire Band) . The caliber of these performers cannot be understated, for example Mr Preap Sovath is one of the most popular singers in Cambodia, he has appeared in many karaoke videos and his CD’s and DVD’s have sold extensively throughout Cambodia, USA, Canada, France and Australia. One internet survey concluded that over 40% of all Khmer internet users owned a CD or DVD by this popular artist making him a huge draw-card for these concerts. Furthermore, Mr Preap Sovat has recently been named as the Goodwill Ambassador for Wildlife Conservation in Cambodia. The Director of HCC, Ms Terri Ly says “this fund raising concert is part of HCC’s strategies for its long-term survival. The concert allows HCC not just to raise fund and sell the products made by the children, but it also allows HCC to be exposed to the Cambodian-Australian community, allowing them to support the work we do in Cambodia. It is also the cultural exchange for the Cambodian pop stars. ” Mr Preap also expressed how happy he was to be able to be part of such a great humanitarian and enjoyable event. “ I am very excited to be able to participate in this fund raising concert to help the vulnerable children in HCC’s care. I have visited the HCC’s shelter and it broke my heart to meet a girl who had become mentally impaired because of her abuse. It gives me great pleasure to be able to assist HCC in their work with this girl and other vulnerable children. ” The singers and their band will depart Phnom Penh on Tuesday the 20th June for their five weeks’ tour of Australia that will see them perform 5 concerts in Australia’s 3 biggest cities: Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane. The concert dates are as follows: Melbourne: 24th June & 22nd July. Sydney: 1st & 8th July. Brisbane: 15th July. If you have friends or relatives living in these cities, then we would ask that you encourage them to support these charity events.
