IOM Signs Agreement with Thai Ministries to Combat Trafficking1

August 2005

The International Organization for Migration signed a cooperation agreement on 16 August 2005 with eight Thai ministries to step up the country's fight against human trafficking through improved training of officials and public awareness-raising.

The agreement was signed in Bangkok by the Thai Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Office of the Attorney General, the Ministry of the Interior, the Office of the Royal Thai Police, the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Labour.

Under the agreement, IOM will provide technical assistance in the form of training and coordination in the prevention of trafficking in women and children. It will also provide teaching materials for use in schools and take part in other awareness raising initiatives and information campaigns.

IOM Regional Representative Irena Vojackova-Sollorana described the agreement as "a recognition of IOM's excellent track record in the return and reintegration of trafficking victims in the Mekong region."

This year several thousand young Thais have already watched IOM's acclaimed Asian human trafficking public awareness video - "Shattered Dreams" - through an IOM initiative in partnership with a local NGO - Thai Youth News.

The full-length animation, which has been translated into nine regional languages, provides life skills messages through the story of a young Asia woman from a rural community trafficked to the city.
