Australian Federal Police (AFP) Signs 'Historic' Agreement with Vietnam, Cambodia

April 13, 2006

Terrorism, human trafficking, money laundering and paedophilia will be targeted as part of law enforcement agreements between the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Vietnamese police and Cambodian police.

Commissioner Mick Keelty says the AFP is the first western law enforcement agency to sign such an agreement with the Vietnamese National Police Force. He has also described the agreement with the Cambodian National Police Force as historic.

Mr Keelty says with so many Vietnamese expatriates in Australia he expects it will have an impact on crime between the two countries.

He says the agreement will go some way to protecting children from exploitation. "Particularly young girls and young women become victims of sexual servitude or young boys become victims of paedophilia activities," he said.
