The Angel Coalition is a consortium of 61 Russian and CIS NGOs (non-governmental organizations) that was created in 1999 in response to the growing international crisis of trafficking. International criminal groups are trafficking young women and girls from the CIS to over 50 countries around the world for the purposes of forced prostitution. Registered in St. Petersburg, and in Moscow, the Angel Coalition mission is the prevention of sexual trafficking through research, education and training, and the rescue, return and rehabilitation of trafficking victims.
The Angel Coalition is Russia's largest, most-respected anti-trafficking consortium. Coalition activities include the operation of the Trafficking Victim Assistance Center (TVAC) in Moscow and a network of nine regional safe houses providing assistance services to Russian trafficking victims. Each year, it conducts international conferences in Russia that bring together not only members, but national and international anti-trafficking leadership including governments and law enforcement.
During 2004-2005, The Angel Coalition conducted a series of five high level regional trainings in Petrozavodsk, St. Petersburg, Murmansk, Kazan and Yaroslavl which were attended by more than 400 participants - predominately government officials and law enforcement personnel.
Angel Coalition members have conducted hundreds of educational meetings in orphanages, schools and colleges throughout Russia, using videotapes, brochures and research created by Coalition members, the UN and other NGOs. Through these programs, thousands of at-risk girls and young women have learned about the dangers of trafficking and the techniques used by traffickers to lure them abroad.
Angel Coalition members have also prioritized the civic training of police, media, educational, community and elected leaders, and other NGOs. From Petrozavodsk to Chelyabinsk, Angel Coalition members meet on a regular basis with their at-large community to ensure public awareness of trafficking and to discuss what can be done at the local level to prevent it.
The Angel Coalition is funded by foundations, private donors and foreign governments.
