Kenya - IOM holds Workshops on Combating Human Trafficking1

November 08, 2005

The IOM Mission with Regional Functions for East and Central Africa organised two 3-day capacity building workshops on "Concepts, Challenges, and Strategies to Combat Human Trafficking".

The first workshop opened on 8 November 2005 in Naivasha, Kenya as part of a Norwegian-funded counter-trafficking project in Kenya. The second capacity building workshop, which was held on 13 November 2005 in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, was funded by the US State Department’s Bureau for Population, Refugees and Migration.

Each workshop brings together more than 30 participants representing the Governments of Kenya and Tanzania (Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar), civil society organizations, the media, NGOs and the private sector, as well as UN representatives and diverse regional specialists on counter human trafficking.

The main objective of the workshops was to provide participants with the understanding, skills, information, and knowledge that will enable them to effectively combat human trafficking.

Participants will be familiarized with basic concepts of trafficking in persons and the respective terminology; with data creation and research on trafficking in persons; best practices of victim assistance; victims’ identification; and legislation (international and national) relevant to counter human trafficking.

The workshop also stressed the need for the establishment of legal frameworks combating the trafficking in persons in support of the Kenyan and Tanzanian Governments’ efforts to fight this transnational crime.
