On 15 September 2005, Australia ratified the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children, which supplements the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime initiated in 2000. The Australian Government's $20 million package to combat people trafficking, announced on 13 October 2003, demonstrates Australia's strong commitment to implementing its obligations under the People Trafficking Protocol. New federal offences which target the trafficking of persons within, into and out of Australia and carry penalties of up to 25 years imprisonment entered into force on 3 August 2005.
