Anti-trafficking Center Established in Thailand1

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has offered a fund of 100 million Baht to the Ministry of Social Development and Human Society to support victims of human trafficking. The Department of Social Development and Welfare will serve as the focal point. The budget is expected to subsidize persons who are identified as victims and will provide funds for compensation, as well as support anti-trafficking projects from organizations who require funding – this will be based on submitted project proposals.

Permanent secretary for Social Development and Human Security in Thailand Mr. Wanlop Phloytabtim revealed that the Ministry had established the National Operational Center on Human Trafficking in Bangkok in order to be the coordinating body for partners on the protection and prevention of human trafficking. On the provincial level, the governor will act as the chairperson while at the international level, the consul or ambassador will be nominated. The aim is to build up the effective mechanism for trafficking, enhance the capability to help victims, and serve the related information.

Mr. Wanlop said victims could request for supporting funds from the Bureau of Anti-Trafficking in Women and Children, Department of Social Development and Welfare Now the Ministry has the fund of 500 million baht, and 100 million baht has been targeted as the initial budget.
