Thailand: Human Trafficking Prevention Needs the Support from Public1

November 2005

Ms. Jitrapa Sunthornpipit, Director of Bureau of Gender Equality Promotion, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security revealed the results of a public hearing on human trafficking in Chiang Rai province. The most critical issue emerged was the attitude of people. At present, Thai people choose to go to work in foreign countries and they could be lured into the sex trade, child labor, migration, and false marriage.

Ms. Jitrapa said the influence and cooperation from communities, such as from community organizations, women groups, district heads, village heads, and volunteers could help solve the problems. A working plan of 3 years will be drafted. The group development activities are also supported and related information will be disseminated. Villagers will be trained to monitor and take a closer look on trafficking issues. In 2006, the new activities will be initiated such as network development, vocational training, human trafficking guidebooks, and legal training on trafficking.
