New funding for counter trafficking activities in the Balkans1

March 2005

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) is providing an additional US$ 2 million to IOM’s programmes to combat trafficking and provide assistance to victims of trafficking in Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo (Serbia Montenegro), the FYR of Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia Montenegro and Ukraine.

This funding will allow IOM and its partners to continue providing direct assistance to victims of trafficking for the next two years, in particular to women and children who find themselves stranded in the Balkan countries.

Activities will focus the orderly, safe and dignified return and reintegration of trafficked persons and will strengthen the capacities of local NGOs to provide direct assistance to victims of trafficking.
