On 12 May 2004, the Committee on NGOs of ECOSOC (the UN Economic and Social Council) recommended ECPAT for consultative status. The application is expected to receive final approval from the full ECOSOC committee when it meets in July.
ECPAT USA represented ECPAT in New York where the hearing took place. NGOs with General and Special consultative status have the right, among other things, to designate authorised representatives to be present at public meetings, submit written statements, and make oral presentations.
In addition, NGOs with General and Special consultative status have the right to propose items for the agenda of ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, and to address ECOSOC.
