In early August 2004, the Ministry of Women's Affairs in Cambodia, in collaboration with its provincial department in Battambang and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), launched a one-week awareness-raising campaign on the potential dangers of migration in five districts of Battambang province (Maung Russei, Koas Krala, Bavel, Thmar Kaul and Battambang). The organizers staged a motorcycle rally through the 5 districts, which was complemented by video shows and stage plays at each stop, where the participants to the rally informed the village audience about the possible risks of migration, focusing in particular on the potential threat of falling victim to human traffickers.
Many residents of Battambang province migrate to seek work in other parts of the country, as well as in neighboring countries. Some of them, however, have to face abuse and exploitation in the course of the process.
