Malaysia Promises to Act Against Human Trafficking

March 25, 2006

Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato' Seri Syed Hamid Albar has promised his country will act against Malaysians involved in human trafficking. The promise was made following reports of several incidents of human trafficking from Indonesia to Malaysia. Two weeks ago a Medan resident who is a suspect in a human trafficking case was extradited from Malaysia back to Medan. The suspect, identified as Ria, and her Malaysian husband were accused of smuggling two women from Medan to Malaysia. The women, who were to become commercial sex workers, escaped after leaping from a fourth floor apartment in Pucong, Malaysia. North Sumatra Police are still working to identify what is thought to be a trafficking syndicate.
