On 29th October 2004, in Yangon, Burma, the COMMIT Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was officially signed by Ministerial representatives from Cambodia, P.R. China, Lao P.D.R, Burma, Thailand and Vietnam. This is a historic agreement on human trafficking, first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region. COMMIT stands for Coordinated Mekong Ministerial Initiative Against Trafficking.
On 27-28 October 2004, COMMIT senior officials met to discuss the Sub-Regional Plan of Action, which is the action-oriented follow-up under the framework of the MOU.
The UN Inter-Agency Project on Trafficking Office acts as Secretariat to the COMMIT Process.
Officials at the meeting confirmed that in early 2005, a Regional Plan of Action on trafficking will be enacted based upon the framework set forth in the MOU.
The COMMIT initiative is being funded by the ADB, The Royal Norwegian Government, AUSAID, NZAID, SIDA, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNODC, Save the Children UK, and International Organization for Migration (IOM).
