From 1 July 2005 to 31 August 2005, a campaign against anti-trafficking in women and children is being implemented by the General Department of Police on the border of Vietnam and China. This campaign focuses on 6 key North border provinces which are Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Lao Cai and Lai Chau. One of the important elements of this campaign is to identify and eradicate the gangs trafficking women and children to China. The Vietnamese police are cooperating with Chinese police in order to identify and support the Vietnamese trafficked women and children to return to Vietnam, and to arrest the traffickers who are at large in China.
During the first six months of 2005, 46 cases related to trafficking women and children to China were discovered by the police force of the Northern border provinces, 75 traffickers were arrested and 109 victims were identified. The Vietnamese police also cooperated with Chinese police to rescue 61 women and children who were trafficked to China through returning them to their families.
This campaign to combat transnational trafficking in women and children in the Vietnam-China border area was based on the co-operation of the Ministries of Public Security in both countries. This also supports in key provinces the activities of National Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Women and Children 2004-2010, the Plan which is approved by Vietnam Government.
