August 2006.
In the beginning of this summer, Vital Voices took part in an international law enforcement colloquium on Transnational Exploitation of Women and Children organized by the Australian Federal Police in Canberra, Australia. As the only international NGO representative, Vital Voices urged collaboration between government and civil society to tackle the global challenge of human trafficking. This gathering was particularly significant because it was a law enforcement initiative. Law enforcement experts from around the world shared their experience prosecuting and investigating trafficking cases. More importantly, Australian NGO representatives were in the same room for the first time discussing how they can assist the work of the government’s and their needs.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our readers who responded to our newsletter survey request. We had an extraordinary response and were pleased to hear your feedback on how we can make this publication the most useful tool for your anti-trafficking work. We are in the process of redesigning our newsletter and will incorporate your valuable ideas in our upcoming new version.
Around the world, new anti-trafficking initiatives are taking place: Central and West African nations had a regional meeting; a new rehabilitation center opened in Belarus; three new states in the US passed anti-trafficking laws; and many new reports, including the US Government Accountability Office’s new report to examine US Government’s anti-trafficking efforts.
