Activities
World Vision is currently implementing a regional anti-trafficking project that covers Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. The goal of the Mekong Delta Regional Trafficking Strategy (MDRTS) project is to reduce the number of women and children trafficked for sex work or other forms of exploitative labor within and between the target countries. Supporting this goal are four primary objectives:
- Prevention of trafficking in persons through providing economic assistance for the vulnerable, strengthening children/youth participation in trafficking prevention, and raising awareness in local communities
- Protection of trafficked persons by researching current situation and trends, providing recovery and reintegration services, and capacity building of existing victim recovery service providers
- Prosecution of traffickers through greater case information exchange between local NGOs, international organizations, and law enforcement agencies and capacity building of appropriate government ministries to investigate, arrest, and convict traffickers
- Strengthen networks and improve communication, coordination, and cooperation among the five target countries to enhance the sharing of information, training and best practices in assisting trafficking victims in the target countries
In Cambodia, World Vision Cambodia (WVC) is carrying out the following activities:
- Support the on-going work of the Trauma Recover Center, which provides comprehensive recovery services for trafficked and sexually abused children. Capacity to provide tailored services to Vietnamese girls strengthened through Vietnamese-speaking house parents, counselors, and reintegration officers
- Partner with the Ministry of Interior to support the on-going work of the Legal Enforcement Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Children (LEASETC) project
- The national hotline to report sex offenders and traffickers has been expanded to three provincial hotspots
- A police database used to track and arrest sex offenders and traffickers is being operationalized in five provinces in addition to the main database in Phnom Penh
One of the largest NGOs in Cambodia, World Vision Cambodia has an annual budget of more than USD 7 million, and has over 800 staff.
World Vision Cambodia also runs workshops to stop child sex tourism.
