Activities

The MWVA leads preventative educational programs throughout Cambodia's provinces. It holds local awareness campaigns, and distributes posters, videos, and t-shirts. The MWVA is working to tackle the root causes of trafficking as well as advocate for the protection and recovery of victims.

MWVA works with the Inter-Agency Project On Human Trafficking in the Mekong Sub-Region sponsored by UNIAP and in partnership with IOM.  UNIAP Cambodia works in four core areas:

  • Building the knowledge base on human trafficking;
  • Supporting action on high priority areas;
  • Targeted interventions that  respond to identified gaps; and
  • Strengthening advocacy on  the  issues  of  trafficking.

In 2000, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA) launched a 3-year project on the Prevention of All Forms of Trafficking in Women and Children in Cambodia, in cooperation with the IOM and the Government of Finland. This phase had 3 components, namely legal literacy, information dissemination and awareness raising campaign, policy advocacy. Recently, a second phase started which builds on the success of the first phase and adds a fourth pilot component: financial support and vocational training.

Early in 2003, MoWA commenced a three-year project in cooperation with IOM on "Information Campaign to Combat Trafficking in Women and Children in Cambodia". Its three components relate the following:

  • To providing information to vulnerable groups on the dangers and consequences of trafficking and possibilities for regular migration
  • To assist in developing community-based networks including a database on household information concerning human trafficking
  • To undertake policy and advocacy action on counter-trafficking and migration issues

MWVA also encourages village groups to develop sustainable anti-trafficking mechanisms, and the National Police have set up an anti-trafficking hotline in order to help encourage the denouncement of trafficking activities (HOTLINE: 02 3720555).
