Activities

In Vietnam, gender inequality remains a fundamental cause of poverty and a serious challenge to development. ActionAid Vietnam is committed to promoting gender equality and ensuring that women and girls have the same rights and opportunities in life as men and boys, including the ability to participate in the public sphere, make decisions and benefit from development.

ActionAid Vietnam seeks to ensure that its development programmes address the needs and interests of poor women and men, girls and boys. They also hope to gradually address the structural causes of gender inequality at the local and national level. They aim to promote the rights of women, especially vulnerable women and girls. ActionAid Vietnam also hopes to ensure there is gender mainstreaming at all levels of the organisation.

Human Trafficking:

Together with their partners ActionAid has set up a project that helps women earn a living, making them less susceptible to dubious offers of jobs, money and marriage. Skills such as weaving, design, sewing and basket-making are taught. The women have formed their own production line, turning rough sheaves of grass into intricately designed handbags, cushion covers and cloths for sale at local markets.

ActionAid supports projects across Vietnam that raise awareness of the dangers of trafficking and aim to show women that they are putting themselves in a dangerous position by agreeing to marriage or a new job they know nothing about.  Through monthly meetings in local villages women are brought together to discuss and learn about the dangers of trafficking and spread the word about the sexual exploitation of women.
