Activities

The African Tourism Organization (ATO) was founded as a regional umbrella organization by Self Help Initiatives, Inc. (SEHI),  whose primary aim is to advocate for the welfare of exploited children and youths in war-ravaged African countries such as Sierra Leone, Liberia and Uganda, marking a decade of advocacy.

ATO is organizing the conference on 27 September 2006: Tackling Human Trafficking and Illegal Migration as a Development Issue in Commonwealth and Francophone African Countries

African Tourism Organization Against Trafficking in Human Beings. The model is to support victims and prevent human trafficking through information campaign, rehabilitation, propor-tourism and entrepreneurship, to strive toward eradication of poverty which is part of the millennium goal. The following are key elements for bringing about desired changes:

  • Regional Task Force Desk for Safe Return and Recovery
  • Gender
  • Empowerment / Capacity  Building /Advocacy
  • Culture and Context
  • Economic Improvement/Enterprises
  • Awareness/Public Education

GOAL: Our overall goal is to build an African network to prevent and support victims; Formulate a protocol for repatriation and rehabilitation for trafficked persons.

OBJECTIVES:  The specific objectives are as follows:

  • To establish a network designed to build the capacity in the region to prevent human trafficking as a long term long ;
  • To provide strategies and methodology to alleviate the problem of human trafficking on an on-going basis;
  • To promote sustainable economic and social development, Agriculture ,tourism and deeper integration and partnership with affected peoples on an on-going basis; and
  • To promote gender equality, social justice, and public education in support of victims of human trafficking and all citizenry on an on-going basis.

Implementation Strategy: The project will focus on the following two primary activities in its initial phase:

  • Lobbying and advocacy for long-term responsible development involving strategies for Tourism Expansion / Agricultural Development/Urban & Rural Enterprises
  • Developing social welfare/legal/employment referral systems for human trafficking and poverty victims for medium/long term impact
