In May 2003 Burma’s military government signed an agreement with the International Labor Organization to eliminate forced labor in the country. After 10 months of discussion and negotiations, the agreement was formally signed at the ILO's annual conference in Geneva in June 2003. The agreement calls for appointing an independent official to monitor labor standards in Burma. The Burmese representative of the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue, a Geneva-based group must investigate claims by victims of forced labor and liaise with the authorities.1
2004: The ILO is not currently conducting programming in Burma.
