The Shan Women's Action Network (SWAN) is a founding member of the Women's League of Burma (WLB), an umbrella women's organization comprising eleven women's groups from Burma. SWAN is a network of Shan women active in and along the Thai-Burma border. Its mission is to work for gender equality and justice for Shan women in the struggle for social and political change through community-based actions, research and advocacy.
The Shan Women's Action Network and the Women's League of Burma received the 2005 Women's Rights Prize for challenging human rights violations and bringing attention to the systematic sexual abuse of ethnic Shan women. The Women's Rights Prize is presented to an individual or group that has made significant contributions, often at great risk, to furthering the rights of women and girls in any area and to advancing public awareness of the need for gender equality to achieve a just world.
