The Scalabrini Migration Center (SMC) is a non-profit research institute dedicated to the study of human migration and refugee movements from and within Asia. The center engages in research, publications, documentation, advocacy, networking and special programs.
SMC is an associate member of the UNESCO-MOST Asia-Pacific Migration Research Network (APMRN), the Philippine Migration Research Network (PMRN), and the Philippine Migrants Rights Watch (PMRW).
SMC publishes the refereed journal Asian and Pacific Migration Journal, the first academic journal on migration in the region. It also publishes an electronic newsletter, the Asian Migration News, which provides bi-weekly updates on migration-related developments in the region. Asian Migration News may be accessed from the center's website: www.smc.org.ph.
Among the research that SMC has conducted are: the impacts of migration on the family, solo-parenting, female migration, international marriages between Filipino women and foreign men, migration and entrepreneurship, evaluation of the Pre-Departure Orientation Seminars (PDOS), assessment of pre-departure information programs, Filipino migration to Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, assessment of HIV vulnerability in migration in the BIMP-EAGA region, and the return and reintegration of Filipino women migrants.
SMC coordinated a four-country study on the phenomenon of irregular or unauthorized migration in two countries of origin, the Philippines and Indonesia, and two countries of destination, Malaysia and Thailand. The report of this study has been published into a book, Unauthorized Migration in Southeast Asia (SMC, 2003).
