An ECPAT Philippines regional office, known as ECPAT Cebu, was set up in the Visayas in response to sex tourism in Cebu and the neighbouring islands. It is expected that ECPAT Cebu will reach out to other parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.
A national strategic plan has been adopted by the Multisectoral Network Against Trafficking in Persons and, in collaboration with UNICEF, ECPAT has initiated the information of the Cebu Coalition Against Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes. A research study on trafficking in children in the Philippines is being conducted to provide data on the extent of child trafficking in selected high-risk areas. ECPAT Cebu also produces Tingog sa Kabataan, a weekly radio programme by children for children, which continues to prove very popular.
The Cebu office will use the research on child sex tourism to determine whether national legislation has translated into improvements in local ordinances and consultations with local government departments, tour operators, and law enforcement agencies will follow.
