Activities
According to UNICEF, there has been an increase in reported cases of child abuse, sexual exploitation, child labour in hazardous conditions, children in armed conflict, and children in conflict with the law. UNICEF works in the Philippines with the Department of Justice, Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Social Welfare and Development, various non-governmental organizations and other partners on:
- Prevention of, and early interventions for, child abuse and exploitation – UNICEF helps provide opportunities for education through back-to-school schemes, life skills education, and vocational training
- Services for the rescue, recovery, and reintegration of children in need of special protection – UNICEF supports the training of social workers, setting up alternative parental care programs, and surveillance and rescue activities
- Strengthening networks for child protection – UNICEF helps organize functional Barangay (Village) Councils for the Protection of Children, and works with faith-based organizations to create structures and develop programs that address child protection
- Improving legal protection and the justice system for children – UNICEF supports the training of police officers, judges, and other members of the justice system, assists initiatives on diversion and alternatives to detention for children in conflict with the law, and provides child-sensitive investigation studios and court equipment
