Since 2002, The Asia Foundation has developed a multi-disciplinary, inter-agency approach to anti-trafficking in persons that promotes cooperation among the police, government agencies, and NGOs. The partners involved in implementing this model have successfully coordinated each step of many trafficking cases, from rescuing trafficking victims, to preparing them for reintegration into society, to the prosecution of the traffickers.
Since the program began, the Foundation and its partners have trained hundreds of government officials, NGOs, social workers, lawyers, and forensic professionals, as well as officials at the Bureau of Anti-Trafficking in Women and Children. The effectiveness of the program prompted the Thai government to adapt the curriculum for civil employees who work on trafficking issues.
The Asia Foundation received financial support from the East Asia Pacific Bureau of the US State Department to fund partially or completely a number of nongovernmental organizations in Thailand to combat trafficking. These NGOs funded by the Asia Foundation include: IMPECT, The Hotline Center Foundation, CCPCR, FACE, and Law Society of Thailand Committee for Human Rights.
The Asia Foundation’s Thailand office is launching a cutting-edge informational website to facilitate information sharing, coordination, and cooperation among organizations that deal with various aspects of trafficking, from shelters and hotlines to courts and governmental and international agencies. The Thai/English language website is the first step in an ambitious program that will eventually facilitate cross-border collaboration to reduce trafficking across the Asia-Pacific Region.1
