The Department of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the cooperation of UNIAP (UN Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking in the Greater Mekong Sub-region), held a symposium in Bangkok in June 2002 on the welfare of victims of trafficking, especially women and children.
The symposium was attended by various concerned agencies of the Royal Thai Government and NGO’s and discussions were held on ways to improve information exchange as well as on networking to eradicate human trafficking. The symposium also agreed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Thai Police should rapidly and directly expedite the flow of any relevant information regarding traffickers to the other agency. The Department assisted 400 women and girls found in exploitative situations abroad to return to Thailand in the period October 2002 – January 31, 2004.
Thailand is a founding member of the Human Security Network. In the case of poverty alleviation, Thailand has informed the HSN of its initiatives in this area. These include the registration of poor people across the country as part of national policy to eradicate abject poverty within 6 years; enhancing regional socio-economic development through such projects as the Ayewady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Co-operation Strategy (ACMECS); developing a Human Security Index to measure levels of development in various areas; and addressing the problem of human trafficking.
