Shakti Asian Women's Centre, Incorporated was established in Auckland in 1997. They became part of the Women's Refuge Network in 1999. The Refuge Network deals primarily with issues of domestic violence for Asian and immigrant women. Some of the cases that Shakti Asian Women’s Centre deals with concerns women who have been trafficked to New Zealand, namely as arranged brides who are then forced into servitude or prostitution.
The focal point of operations is a 24 hours Crisis Call Service for Domestic Violence (0800 SHAKTI ). The Centre also provides Advocacy and Social Outreach work in a safe and culturally appropriate environment besides advocating on behalf of women's issues, making referrals and lobbying for social change.
