The Asian Crime Unit is in charge of the investigation of Asian Organized Crime, and serious crimes in which Asians are identified as being involved.
The main area of coverage of the Unit includes activities of nationals from Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar/Burma, Laos, and Vietnam. The Unit also maintains up-to-date knowledge of activities of nationals from China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, and other Asian nations.
It cultivates and maintains informants within those sectors of society. It routinely identifies and locates persons involved in people trafficking/smuggling, and subsequently disseminates relevant information to appropriate agencies in New Zealand, which will take further action, i.e. prosecuting.
The Unit is regularly (weekly) involved in identifying and locating Asian overstayers in New Zealand which in turn assists to identify the traffickers, current trends, methods, routes, etc. It conducts extensive intelligence gathering on Asian Organised Crime, which includes matters relating to people trafficking/smuggling.
