The Social Welfare Department was established in 1946 with the task to create a caring Malaysian society. The Department deals mainly with welfare services and is responsible for the National Social Welfare Policy. Amongst others, the Department also provides care and rehabilitation to vulnerable communities including children, families, the disabled, victims of natural disasters and the aged.
In 2006, UNICEF will continue its partnership with the Social Welfare Department to provide training for para-counselors and court advisors as well as document Malaysia's best practices on child participation.
The Department of Social Welfare, part of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, maintains statistics on the number of women who are sent to rehabilitation centers after being detained in suspected places of prostitution.
