CHILD WISE (ECPAT Australia) has several projects geared towards protecting children in Australia as well as raising travelers’ awareness about child sex tourism abroad.
One of their main projects, CHILD WISE TOURISM, was developed in 1999 to provide training and assistance to the Australian Government, tourism industry and to tourism educators in ASEAN countries where child sex tourism exists or is emerging. Thus far, CHILD WISE TOURISM training programs have been initiated in seven countries including: Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Lao PDR and the Philippines.
CHILD WISE and the Pacific Asia Travel Association have worked closely with ASEAN governments to distribute, via immigration cards, six tourism guidelines to promote responsible tourism practices. Approved in 2004, these guidelines encourage tourists to 'only leave a footprint behind' by respecting indigenous cultures, heritages and all peoples including women and children.
With support from the Australian Government (AusAID), CHILD WISE has also developed a Regional Think Tank that provides a forum for policy development on the prevention of sexual exploitation of children by tourists in Southeast Asia.
