In partnership with the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Japan CSO Network, the Foundation organized a national symposium on trafficking in persons (TIP) in Japan. The first ever to include high level policymakers, law enforcement officials, staff of foreign embassies, lawyers, and NGOs. The symposium drew extensive media attention and sparked the formation of the first anti-trafficking legislative working group in Japan comprised of NGOs, lawyers, and Diet members.
This led to the formation of an NGO coalition, the Japan Network Against Trafficking in Persons (JNATIP), which is launching an advocacy campaign for passage of anti-trafficking legislation. This network was launched, with wide-spread media coverage, at an Asia Foundation-sponsored workshop in October 2003, helping to raise the visibility of this problem and build a constituency to support the legislation.
The Asia Foundation, in co-operation with the International Labor Organization and with the help of the Japan CSO Network hosted the INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON TRAFFICKING OF WOMEN TO JAPAN on January 22, 2003. This symposium aimed to increase awareness within Japan of the role that Japan plays as a destination country in the spread of international trafficking in persons.
The symposium provided an opportunity for the airing of views on trafficking in persons from various perspectives: NGOs assisting trafficked victims, law-enforcement agencies, the diplomatic community and policy-makers.
