Government Laws

Legislation against child pornography

Burma legislation has a number of different provisions that may be called upon when dealing with child pornography. Firstly, the Child Law states that it is a punishable offence to use children in the making of pornographic material, such as pictures, films and videotapes. Penalties range from a fine to 2 years imprisonment. This refers solely to production of child pornography. Secondly, a general provision in the Penal Code prohibits the exhibition and distribution of obscene material, in whatever form. Associated sections such as production, import/ export and possession are also prohibited if committed with the purpose of exhibition and distribution. It is safe to assume that most forms of child pornography material are prohibited under this provision. The penalty is a fine or imprisonment for up to 3 months.
