On September 22 and 23, 2003, the Expert Group meeting on “Prevention of International Trafficking and Promotion of Public Awareness Campaign” was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
During the Second Regional Ministerial Conference on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime held in Bali, Indonesia from 28-30 April 2003, the Ministers acknowledged the progress of the Ad Hoc Experts’ Groups on their role in strengthening their regional cooperation on these related issues. At the first Ad Hoc Experts’ Group meeting held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 13-14 March 2003 a draft action plan was developed for future work beyond the second Regional Ministerial Conference with a strategy to further undertake activities related to the development of information sharing and exchange, regional public awareness campaigns and capacity building.
Among the topics discussed at the September meeting were the government’s role in the prevention of trafficking, the role of education in the prevention of trafficking, the economics of trafficking, and the promotion of public awareness campaigns against trafficking. The objectives in the workshops were to establish common ground for a survey questionnaire for the efficacy of Public Awareness Campaigns, identify useful measures that can be undertaken within the framework of the Bali Process to establish a pilot awareness raising project in cooperation with media, NGOs and international organizations, and share knowledge, experiences, and best practices for public awareness campaigns.
