Joan Weisman, president of the Brookfield, Connecticut League of Women Voters, and others are organizing the conference titled, "Combating Sex Slavery Here and Now: The Exploration of Human Trafficking." It is scheduled for 26 September 2005 7:30 p.m. at Western Connecticut State University.
Weisman said the Connecticut Permanent Commission on the Status of Women has been helpful in suggesting speakers. State Rep. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, has also agreed to participate in the forum. Stillman, a league member in Waterford, served as chairwoman on a legislative study committee that completed a report on trafficking women and children in the state.
In addition to Western Connecticut State University, the National Council on Jewish Women, the Women's Center of Greater Danbury and the Greater Danbury Coalition for Community United are collaborating on the forum.
At a recent planning session, suggested topics for the forum included defining human trafficking with an emphasis on sexual slavery, looking at whether Danbury is a holding area or a place traffickers look to set up permanent illegal businesses, the types of trafficking, current laws for intervention and what the community can realistically do to make a difference.
