The U.S. State Department, in partnership with the non governmental War Against Trafficking Alliance, hosted an international conference on "Pathbreaking Strategies in the Global Fight Against Sex Trafficking" on February 23 26, 2003 in Washington DC.
The State Department was directed by law to host this conference to underscore the commitment of the United States to the eradication of this modern day form of slavery. Approximately 350 participants from every continent (except Antarctica) came to Washington, DC to discuss key strategies to combat human trafficking, especially for sexual exploitation. This unprecedented conference not only gave the participants the opportunity to network with one another, it highlighted the importance of the issue of trafficking on the international agenda. Richard L. Armitage, Deputy Secretary of State and John Ashcroft, Attorney General, relayed to the participants the commitment of the United States in promoting cooperation amongst many relevant international actors B NGOs, governmental organizations, and international NGOs B in combating the complex problem of trafficking. Particularly, the conference highlighted strategies from throughout the world that have been successful in the prevention and prosecution of trafficking, or in the protection of its victims. It also recognized those who have devised particularly innovative solutions in the fight against trafficking.
