First International Pop Concert by Mekong Hill Tribe Musicians Takes Aim at HIV/AIDS, Human Trafficking and Drug Abuse Issues
United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Radio Thailand Chiang Mai (RTC) will team up to present the first International Hill Tribe Pop Concert Against HIV/AIDS, Human Trafficking and Drugs in the northern city of Chiang Mai on 20 November 2004.
For the first time, twenty of the most popular singers from the Akha, Hmong, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, Mien and Shan communities will appear together in a five-hour concert to be broadcast live by Radio Thailand Chiang Mai. The radio station is heard throughout a 6-country area that is home to an estimated 15 million of the singers' fellow tribespeople.
Radio Thailand Chiang Mai transmits across Thailand, southern China, Lao PDR, northern Viet Nam, Myanmar, and parts of India. The local stars singing at the Hill Tribe Pop Concert come from Thailand, Myanmar and the Lao PDR.
UNESCO and Radio Thailand Chiang Mai anticipate a high turnout, with over 3,500 highland minorities people expected to attend. RTC will broadcast the concert live throughout the region. Because of the high demand, all tickets for the concert were taken up in less than a week.
The concert will take place at the Public Relations Department's Region 3 compound in Chiang Mai (next to the Mother and Child Hospital on Prachasampan Road) from 7pm until midnight. Thailand 's Channel 11 television station will do a simultaneous live prime-time telecast at 8:30-9:30 pm.
The concert is presented with support from the UNDP South East Asia HIV and Development Programme, the UN Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (UNIAP), UNAIDS, the ILO, the World Food Programme, the UNICEF country office in Thailand, the UNCIEF East Asia and the Pacific Regional Office, and the Thai Pure Drinks Limited.
