Event Details

Following the success of South Texas College's 2006 conference on Women and War, the Women's Studies committee at the college is organizing its second annual conference, which will focus on the topic of Human Trafficking. The conference will be held on 18-19 April 2007.

The college is extending an invitation to researchers, faculty, graduate students, journalists and practitioners to present findings and observations on a wide range of issues related to human and sex trafficking. Submissions are welcomed for papers that are broadly themed, as well as those concerned with specific geographic areas or the causes and effects of Sex and Labor Trafficking, Organized Sex Tourism, and Human Trafficking in War Zones.

The conference will include presentations by guest speakers, and art exhibits on both sides of the Texas/Mexico border. Proposals for papers, panels and roundtables will be accepted through February 20, 2007, and may be sent via e-mail to Jenny Clark, Chair of the Women's Studies Committee at: jclark@southtexascollege.edu or Denese McArthur at damcarth@southtexascollege.edu. Please include the term "Human Trafficking Conference" in the subject line.

The theme for the accompanying art exhibition must deal with human trafficking issues as well. All artwork must be original. The exhibition will be on display in conjunction with the Human Trafficking Conference sponsored by South Texas College's Women's Studies Committee, opening on April 18 and closing May 13.  The "Across the Border" exhibition will be located in two places. One show will be on display at South Texas College's Pecan Campus in McAllen, Texas and the second will be on display in Progresso, Mexico at The Progresso Gallery. The exhibition is open to artists working in all media, including, but not limited to, painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation art, drawings, photography and mixed media. Each artist can submit up to three works. If selected, artists are responsible for delivery by April 13, 2007 and pickup of work by May 20, 2007. If shipped the return postage will be paid for by the exhibit sponsors. Save those pieces that the artist needs to be present to display or present for a special or non-traditional installation, all work must be ready to hang. All submissions should include a self-addressed stamped envelope, properly-sized to fit any items that should be returned. There is a $25 submission fee, which covers the entrance of three pieces.
