On June 23-24, 2004, Vital Voices, the US Embassy in Japan, and the International Labor Organization (ILO) hosted a two-day conference, “Strategies for Combating Human Trafficking in Asia,” in Tokyo, Japan.
This Asian regional conference aimed, among other things, to bring attention and to raise public awareness about trafficking issues in Japan. It also hoped to urge the Japanese government to take concrete actions to combat trafficking.
Participants were leaders from the government and NGO sectors who work to combat human trafficking in their own countries. Japanese government officials, scholars and NGO leaders, selected country representatives from Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, India, the Philippines, Colombia, and Russia gathered to share their experiences and actions in fighting human trafficking on national, regional, and international levels.
