On 10-12 May 2006, Cambodia will be the host to high level government officials from China, Lao PDR, Burma, Thailand and Vietnam for the Fourth Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) on human trafficking. The SOM will review progress made during the past year under the Coordinated Mekong Ministerial Initiative Against Human Trafficking (COMMIT) Sub-Regional Plan of Action (2005-2007).
Delegates will include representatives from at least Director General level and members of the National COMMIT Task Forces from each of the six Mekong sub-region countries. Donors and relevant organisations will also be invited as observers to the SOM.
The COMMIT process was established in late 2003 to provide the basis for a strengthened regional multi-sectoral response to trafficking in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region. The upcoming SOM will be financially supported by UNIAP. Delegates will be able to adjust the Sub-Regional Plan of Action and review financial statements. The SOM is a positive step towards strengthening the regional response to human trafficking.
