Event Details

The Inter-American Development Bank luncheon keynote speaker will be Ambassador John R. Miller, Senior Advisor on Human Trafficking to the Secretary of State and Director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, who will deliver a presentation titled "Ending Human Trafficking: The 21st Century Abolitionist Movement."

Trafficked into domestic service, commercial sexual exploitation, agriculture, sweatshops, and countless other destinations, the common denominator of TIP scenarios is the use of force, fraud, or coercion. Thankfully, a powerful movement of non-governmental organizations, governments, church groups, women's groups, allies in media and in law enforcement and individual advocates are confronting this global travesty with creativity and determination.

Ambassador Miller served in the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of Washington. Prior to being elected congressman, he was active in state and municipal governments, serving as Assistant Attorney General for Washington and Vice President and Legal Counsel for the Washington Environmental Council. While in Congress, Ambassador Miller held a seat on the House Committee on International Relations and was a member of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus. The Seattle Anti-Defamation League gave Ambassador Miller its Torch of Freedom Award for his leadership on human rights.

The IDB Forum on the Americas luncheon program was created in 1995 to bring attention to current development issues concerning the Latin American and Caribbean region. It features presentations on the Bank's programs and projects and serves as a venue for invited speakers to address priority issues in the Americas. The luncheons bring together different sectors of the Washington, D.C. international community that have an interest in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Seating is limited and advance reservations are required.
